George Washington may not have been able to tell a lie, but he could make one hell of a fine whiskey rye.
According to this article, Washington’s distillery was the most profitable part of his plantation by 1799. The distillery has been shut down of course for years and years but it is now being reopened (in Mount Vernon).
If you’re in the area, you’ll definitely want to get out to Mount Vernon and give this historical recipe a try. Only $185 a bottle!
Thanks to Allison Aubrey and NPR for such a great story!
